“Make and Take” Rain Barrel Workshop

Rain barrels are a great way for homeowners and businesses to capture water from a downspout for lawn and garden use. Click here to learn more about water conservation.
These workshops are offered in partnership with Shenandoah County Parks and Recreation. Space is limited.
In these workshops you will receive a 50-gallon recycled plastic barrel and a rain barrel kit from Friends of the North Fork that you will use to build your own rain barrel. During the workshop, you will drill holes, install the faucet and complete other tasks to allow a barrel to catch rainwater for use around your house. You will need to drill one hole in your downspout when you get home with the hole saw are provided in your kit.
Note: please determine where you will want to place your rain barrel so you can consider where to place the faucet and connect to your downspot. For ages 6 and up. Those age 16 and under need to attend with an adult.

Make and Take Your Own Worm Compost Bin
Improve your soil!
It will hold more water and your plants will be happy!
No experience needed. All hardware, tools, supplies and instructions will be supplied to help you build your own worm compost bin using 2 plastic containers. Composters provide a place to recycle kitchen waste; and results in worm castings that are nature’s best fertilizer. If more than one family member will be working on a bin, only one person needs to register. Ages 6 and up may attend. Under 18 need a parent or guardian present.
